The Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers British Columbia Chapter (CAPS BC), is excited to launch the Professional Sommelier Diploma Program in British Columbia beginning in September 2018.
 

BC now joins Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces with fully accredited Sommelier certification.

The Diploma Program consists of 5 modules that offer comprehensive and current training in all aspects of the Sommelier profession. This program prepares candidates for an exciting and rewarding career in the Hospitality Industry by providing training and ensuring proficiency in: wine production, global wine regions, food and wine pairing, cellar management, overall wine and beverage management and all aspects of professional wine service. The program will also include a sommelier management research project as well as a restaurant practicum, or stage, allowing for students to gain invaluable experience and evaluation from top industry professionals.  

Instructors with expertise in each of these key areas will instruct the program. The core instructors represent over 75 years of sommelier/teaching experience; in addition, a dynamic group of guest instructors will be brought in to support and instruct specialized areas of the Diploma Program.

The level of instruction, curriculum and overall program design of the Diploma Program will be truly exceptional.

Candidates who pass all required examinations will be awarded a Professional Sommelier Diploma; and, will have achieved proficiency to fulfill the role of a restaurant sommelier, or other position(s) in the wine and beverage service industry around the world.

Registration for the Vancouver-based Diploma Program will open on August 30th; with the first module starting on September 26th, 2018. The Victoria-based Diploma Program will launch in January 2019

The Professional Sommelier Diploma Program is presented by the BC Chapter of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers. Its intent is to develop professional sommeliers in BC and to further support the growth of the sommelier community within British Columbia and across Canada.

The Diploma Program consists of 5 Modules:

Module One – Sensory Development, Food & Wine Pairing and Wine Production

Module Two – Old World Wines 

Module Three – New World Wines

Module Four – Other Beverage, Spirits, Sake & Beer

Module Five – Sommelier Management

Modules 1-5 all have final examinations required to complete (including written, verbal and practical tasting components); in addition, Module 5 also includes a research project and restaurant practicum. Modules 1-4 must be completed prior to the start of Module 5.

The schedule of Modules has been outlined for classes beginning in Vancouver Fall 2018. A student beginning the Diploma Program in Fall 2018 can expect to complete all 5 modules by Spring 2020.

Upon successful completion of each module the student will earn a CAPS BC Certificate of Completion.

Upon successful completion of Module 5 (and having successfully completed Modules 1-4) the student will earn a Professional Sommelier Diploma through the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, BC Chapter and be awarded their CAPS Pin.

Diploma Program Pre-Requisite

WSET Level 3 (or commensurate qualification) is the pre-requisite for admission into the Professional Sommelier Diploma Program.
